Melbourne's 19th-century buildings of architectural merit include the Customs House, built at the pioneers' landing spot; the former Royal Mint; the Gothic-style Australia and New Zealand (ANZ) Bank; and the Italian Renaissance-style Princess Theatre (1887). Scots Church, Wesley Church, and the Independent Church are other landmarks. Dominating the eastern border of the core area are Parliament House (1856), the meeting place of Victoria's legislators, the Old Treasury and other state government structures. On adjoining Eastern Hill stands St. Patrick's Cathedral, the most prominent of several churches. Also in this section are new federal offices and the Exhibition Building (1880). The University of Melbourne, which was established in 1853, lies to the northwest.
