As one of the most vibrant downtown areas today, it's difficult to believe that Washington, DC's 14th Street corridor was largely abandoned for decades. With the riots and fires that followed the April 1968 assassination of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the neighborhood went into decline in the 70s and 80s. In fact, the intersection of 14th Street and U Street was particularly hard hit by the destruction and saw a rise in drug trafficking in the 70s.
